Back to Project
Casually, but deliberately, our client, Tanner Campbell, mentioned his interest in modern architecture from the 60's. In particular, he identified buildings in DC that were simple, monumental and on some level anonymous. We thought this aesthetic married well with the covert nature of the program and decided it should frame our approach.
Throughout the project's progress, there was a very conscious decision to edit as much as possible. We kept refining the design to it's bare essentials. Even a simple idea of iconography through graphic sea-level markers on the glass was considered too literal and maybe superficial to the assignment.
In the end, the final design seems to create more of anambient design than a literal design. That is, all the parts and pieces of the design seem to create a greater whole. There is not one dramatic move. The combination of all these elements feels like something between traditional modernisn and a cave.
