Back to Project
In the midst of the building boom in New York City, we were asked to work on this project in Jersey City. It was a refreshing change of context given the "catwalk" nature of building design in the city. The Can Building presented a tough, but interesting context in which to consider issues of urban regeneration and renewal.
Analyzing several larger massing options, the team quickly realized this is not what the area needed or demanded. Given the location of the site somewhere between a suburban and urban context, a smaller scale housing complex was chosen.
Using market information on typical unit sizes and configurations, the design adapts successful precedents into a newer model. We are also considering modular home construction as the bones for the buildings. The final product will then be something of the familiar wrapped in something unfamiliar.
